In November 1992, 19-year-old Richard Brant discovered his 9-week-old son Dustin unresponsive in his baby carriage. Dustin died the next day. Despite an autopsy finding pneumonia as the cause of death, police suspected Richard and relied on a second opinion from Charles Smith, who claimed Dustin was a victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome. Richard was charged with manslaughter and, fearing a long sentence, pled guilty to aggravated assault in 1995. Later reviews revealed Smith’s conclusions were wrong and there was no evidence Richard harmed his son.
